There are numerous festivals and traditions on the island of Föhr. A few of these include the "Biikebrennen" bonfire festival, "Ringreiten" (ring riding) shows, the "Maibaumfest" (maypole celebration) in Oevenum and the "Hafenfest" (harborfest) in Wyk including the "Föhr on Fire" fireworks show. At the ring riding shows, equestrians demonstrate their skills by collecting metal rings with a lance while at a gallop. The "Biikebrennen" bonfire festival is traditionally held on the 21st of February each year. Large bonfires are lit all across Sylt, Amrum, Föhr, and the Halligen islands as well as vast parts of the North Frisian mainland. According to pagan custom, this helped expel the evil spirits and protect the crops. Today locals come together with visitors around a fire with a glass of hot cider and then usually eat a traditional dinner of curly kale.
